My Visual Art Glossary

My name is Marielle Gauthier, I have been studying in Visual Art for 2 years and I am currently finishing cegep with generals courses. The program Visual Art contains many courses like drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, video, etc. This is glossary will be helpful for new art students that know the basics but are not familiar with all the words related to art. This glossary will regroup words related to art, but not too obvious. It will include materials, techniques, etc.

acrylic medium
A medium is a substance that is added to paint to change one or more of its properties. In acrylic mediums, these mixtures can be incorporated into the pigment to lengthen its drying time, make it thicker, or change the texture. Mediums are bought in addition to paints.
fr: Médium acrylique
assemblage
An assemblage is a sculpture constructed from found objects. Typically an assemblage does not disguise the original objects used, rather it either tries to show them in a new light, or forms a figurative sculpture from the collection of shapes.
color wheel
A color wheel or color circle is an abstract illustrative organization of color hues around a circle, which shows the relationships between primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors etc.
fr: cercle chromatique
easel
A easel is a stand or frame for supporting or displaying at an angle an artist's canvas, a blackboard, a china plate, etc.
fr: chevalet
editing
Editing is the process of selecting and preparing writing, photography, visual, audible, and film media used to convey information. The editing process can involve correction, condensation, organization, and many other modifications performed with an intention of producing a correct, consistent, accurate and complete work.
fr: montage
exposure
In photography, exposure is the amount of light which reaches your camera sensor or film. It is a crucial part of how bright or dark your pictures appear. There are only two camera settings that affect the actual “luminous exposure” of an image: shutter speed and aperture. The third setting, camera ISO, also affects the brightness of your photos, and it is equally important to understand.
fr: exposition
figure drawing
Figure drawing is the practice of drawing from a live model in different poses. Typically this is done with real models and working from life (not photos). Nude models are mostly used in figure drawing to capture the full essence of the human figure.
focus
In photography, the fine arts and aesthetics, and in photographic composition, the focal point of an image has great importance. It is the point in the image where the photographer hopes to focus the attention of the viewer. The focal point constitutes the center of, or point of, interest for the viewer.
gesso
Gesso (Italian pronunciation: [ˈdʒɛsso]; "chalk", from the Latin: gypsum, from Greek: γύψος) is a white paint mixture consisting of a binder mixed with chalk, gypsum, pigment, or any combination of these. It is used in artwork as a preparation for any number of substrates such as wood panels, canvas and sculpture as a base for paint and other materials that are applied over it.
glaze
Acrylic paint glazes are often used to create more depth in an image. When the glaze medium is applied to acrylic paint, the paint becomes more transparent and will reveal the layer of paint used beneath it, which modifies the color. This technique is commonly used to create more realistic images. Light-colored glazes also have softening effects when painted over dark or bright images. Artists can mix glazes themselves or can buy pre-mixed acrylic glazes.
maquette
A maquette is a small scale model for a finished sculpture. It is used to visualize and test shapes and ideas without incurring the cost and effort of producing a full-scale sculpture. It is the analog of the painter's cartoon or sketch. For commissioned sculptures, especially monumental public sculptures, a maquette may be used to show the client how the finished work will fit in the proposed site.
mould
Mould is a reversed impression of a sculpture which is used to cast replica sculptures. The material used to construct the mould needs to accurately reproduce the surface detail of the original sculpture, while also being strong enough to keep its shape during casting and resilient enough to retain detail after multiple castings. Typical moulding materials include rubber, especially latex rubber, plaster and composites such as ciment fondu.
fr: moule
painter's palette
A palette /ˈpælɪt/, in the original sense of the word, is a rigid, flat surface on which a painter arranges and mixes paints. A palette is usually made of wood, plastic, ceramic, or other hard, inert, nonporous material, and can vary greatly in size and shape. The most commonly known type of painter's palette is made of a thin wood board designed to be held in the artist's hand and rest on the artist's arm.
fr: palette du peintre
perspective
The technique or process of representing on a plane or curved surface the spatial relation of objects as they might appear to the eye specifically: representation in a drawing or painting of parallel lines as converging in order to give the illusion of depth and distance.
photoshop
To alter (a digital image) with Photoshop software or other image-editing software especially in a way that distorts reality (as for deliberately deceptive purposes.

fr: pâte à modeler
portfolio
An artist's portfolio is an edited collection of an artist's best artwork intended to showcase their style or method of work. A portfolio is used by artists to show employers their versatility by showing different samples of current work. Typically, the work reflects an artist's best work or a depth in one specific area of work.
sketch
A sketch is a simply or hastily executed drawing or painting, especially a preliminary one, giving the essential features without the details.
fr: Croquis
slow motion
Also called stop-frame, the process of filming puppets and other objects one frame at a time while incrementally moving or modifying them, giving the illusion of lifelike motion when the captured film frames are viewed in rapid sequence (often used attributively).
still life
A still life is a painting or drawing of an arrangement of objects such as flowers or fruit. It also refers to this type of painting or drawing.
